Door Locks
The doors of the E38 have only one external key lock at the drivers door to lock and unlock all four doors.
The door locks are similar to the E36 design. The door lock actuators slide onto the top of the lock and actuate the lock rod from inside of the actuator. The outside door handle is connected to the latch by a bowden cable.
When installing a lock unit into the drivers door check that the key is in the center position and the linkage rod from the key tumbler is properly engaged with the socket in the lock. If this is not installed correctly the central locking system will malfunction.
Always double check the locks function before installing the door and trim panels.
The door lock incorporates an overrunning lock cylinder.
If any key other than the vehicle key or a tool such as a screwdriver is inserted into the the cylinder, it will cause the cylinder to freewheel or spin.
