Trunk / Liftgate: Adjustments

41 62 014 Adjusting Trunk Lid To Fit

NOTE:
- Lids (hood and trunk) are adjusted to fit the unfinished body shell and are screwed into place.
- Unpainted surfaces become visible after subsequent movement.
- These surfaces must be touched up with paint in the body color.

CAUTION: With automatic trunk lid controls, remove hydraulic cylinder and place in water gutter.

CAUTION: Unintentional dropping shut of the trunk lid is not to be excluded by removing the pressurized hydraulic cylinder.

Open trunk lid and secure it so that it cannot accidentally drop shut.
Remove retaining clips (1) from upper and lower mounts of hydraulic cylinder and remove hydraulic cylinder.

Place hydraulic cylinder (1) in water gutter.

CAUTION: When closing the trunk lid, ensure that neither the hydraulic cylinder nor the trunk lid can be damaged.

Close trunk lid carefully in order to check that the hydraulic cylinder or the trunk lid is not damaged during closing.
If necessary, correct position of hydraulic cylinder (1) in water gutter.

Adapt sides and height of trunk lid:
Align trunk lid to the rear side panels at the same seam width with parallel seams (1), refer to gap dimensions doors/front and trunk lid.
The trunk lid should be flush with the side panels at the tail section above the tail lights (2).
Tolerance - 1 mm, i.e. trunk lid may lie 1 mm below side panels.

Measure height setting of trunk lid in area (3)
Dimension (A) = 100 mm from outer edge of trunk lid.
The trunk lid should be at the same height as both rear side panels.
Tolerance ± 1 mm.

NOTE: Height setting is performed in this area by moving the hinge mount on the body.

If necessary, adapt trunk lid to fit, loosening trunk lid lock to avoid damage.

Adjust trunk lid to fit:
Press ejector into detent buffer and, in this position, twist slightly to left with a Phillips screwdriver.
This locks the ejectors in the detent buffers.

Turn out detent buffers.

Remove gas pressure props.

CAUTION:
- Gas pressure props have strong tension.
- Secure trunk lid to prevent it from closing accidentally.

Loosen left and right screws (1) and (2) to point where it is still just possible to move the trunk lid.

Loosen lower section of trunk lid lock on screws (1) and (2) until it becomes possible to move it to one side.

CAUTION:
- The eccentric pin on the lower section of the trunk lid lock rotates when being locked from upper section of trunk lid lock.
- Secure upper section of trunk lid lock with help of a screwdriver.

This figure displays the side view of the eccentric pin in the lower section of the trunk lid lock
1 = upper dead centre
Trunk lid lock - upper section unlocked
2 = lower dead centre
Trunk lid lock - upper section locked

Open right side panel on luggage compartment and disconnect plug connection to actuator motor for the eccentric pin in lower section of trunk lid lock.

CAUTION:
- Eccentric pin in lower section of trunk lid lock must be at lower dead centre.
- After disconnecting the plug connection to the actuator motor, trunk lid can only be opened using central key.
- Do not leave central key lying in trunk.
- The eccentric pin now remains at the lower dead centre, even after the upper section of the trunk lid lock has been unlocked.

Insert central key in and twist to left: this unlocks upper section of trunk lid lock.
1 = upper section of trunk lid lock locked
2 = upper section of trunk lid lock unlocked

CAUTION:
- Before closing the trunk lid, always check whether the upper section of the trunk lid lock has been unlocked. There is otherwise a risk of damaging the upper or lower section of the trunk lid lock.
- Before locking, ensure that trunk lid is not able to damage the body or the rear window.
- If necessary, first roughly cut the trunk lid to size.
- Carefully close trunk lid and adjust to fit side panels.

Open trunk lid, taking care not to alter the adjustment.
Tighten left and right screws (1) and (2).
Tighten down lower section of trunk lid lock.
Close trunk lid and check adjustment, repeating if necessary.
Open trunk lid.

If the trunk lid was not fitted, carry out following preliminary work before adjusting the Soft Close Automatic:

CAUTION:
- The eccentric pin on the lower section of the trunk lid lock rotates when being locked from upper section of trunk lid lock.
- Secure upper section of trunk lid lock with help of a screwdriver.

This figure displays the side view of the eccentric pin in the lower section of the trunk lid lock

CAUTION: Before closing the trunk lid, always check whether the upper section of the trunk lid lock has been unlocked. There is otherwise a risk of damaging the upper or lower section of the trunk lid lock.

Adjustment of Soft Close Automatic
Subsequent procedure after any adjustment required on trunk lid or after completion of preliminary work:
1. Check fulcrum pads on lower section of trunk lid lock for damage and replace if necessary.

2. Close luggage compartment lid.
Check height of trunk lid relative to side panels and adjust if necessary.
Trunk lid should close flush with side panels and must not protrude beyond this
Tolerance - 1 mm, i.e. trunk lid may lie 1 mm below side panels.

Height adjustment of trunk lid:
Open trunk lid.
Remove trim piece from upper section of trunk lid lock.
For this, lift out expanding rivet (1) and remove finisher cover (2) from trunk lid lock.

Unfasten retaining screws from upper section of trunk lid lock until only its height can be adjusted.
Adjust upper section of trunk lid lock in such a way that trunk lid protrudes as far as possible.
Tighten retaining screws back down on upper section of trunk lid lock, first tightening screws (1, 2), then tightening screw (3).
Close trunk lid, measure amount protruding side panels and note down.
Open trunk lid and loosen retaining screws from upper section of trunk lid lock.
Insert upper section of trunk lid lock by measured amount protruding above side panels.
Tighten retaining screws back down on upper section of trunk lid lock, first tightening screws (1, 2), then tightening screw (3).
Check adjustment and repeat if necessary.

3. Check contact pattern of upper section of trunk lid lock - e.g. coat with grease.
Upper section (1) of trunk lid lock must not scrape against lower section of trunk lid lock.
Eccentric pin in lower section of trunk lid lock must not scrape against upper section (2) of trunk lid lock.
The contact pattern (3) of upper section of trunk lid lock on eccentric pin should be centered (settling characteristics of trunk lid are compensated).

Contact pattern of upper section of trunk lid lock on eccentric pin can be adjusted by inserting or removing washers from retaining screws on lower section of trunk lid lock.

CAUTION:
- Note length of screws: if necessary, use longer screws.
- For correction purposes, unfasten 4 screws 1 and 2, remove finisher on tail panel and fold lower section of trunk lid lock forwards.
- Perform correction and recheck contact pattern, repeating the adjustment where necessary.

4. Open trunk lid.
Screw in detent buffer until left and right sides of trunk lid locate against detent buffers when closed.

CAUTION: Trunk lid must not protrude above side panels otherwise height adjustment can be distorted.

5. Gently twist ejector in detent buffers to right with Phillips screwdriver. This unlocks the detent buffers, enabling ejector to emerge.

6. Refit plug connection to actuator motor for eccentric pin in lower section of trunk lid lock.

CAUTION: Eccentric pin in lower section of trunk lid lock rotates when unlocking from upper section of trunk lid lock

7. Remove central key from trunk lid lock and press down trunk lid lock. This causes eccentric pin in lower section of trunk lid lock to rotate when pressure is applied to the upper dead centre of the trunk lid lock.

8. Close trunk lid and check function of Soft Close Automatic, repeating if necessary.
Add final details to vehicle.
