Engine Temperature Sensor: Description and Operation
The function of engine coolant temperature sensing has changed on the M73 engine. The three required sensors of the M70 engine have been reduced to one for the M73.
The single sensor contains two NTC resistors, one for DME and the other for IKE.
DME I monitors the engine temperature sensor (NTC) located in the front coolant distribution housing. DME I utilizes the input signal for its required functions It also produces a processed output signal that is sent over the CAN Line to the DME II and EML control modules.
The basic signal as monitored by DME I uses the negative coefficient (NTC) principle.
- Temperature increases, resistance decreases.
- Temperature decreases, resistance increases.
