2. Press and hold the soft key for options (double down-pointing arrows) for at least five second The MID will display the Signal Strength Graph, then will display the Eject Box Hardware and Software Numbers for about one second.

3. Software 03 is installed if the MID displays "EJB HW:02 SW:03." If the software level is less than 03, proceed with the replacement of the Eject Box EPROM.

4. Recall the phone numbers and alphabetic name tags stored in the first five memory locations and write them down. These will be used later in this procedure as a check.

5. Turn off the phone and the ignition. Slide the armrest as far forward as it will go. Remove the trim plate below and behind the armrest as shown. Be careful not to damage the leather.

6. Using a thin screwdriver, release the locking tabs under each armrest tray as shown. Be careful not to damage the leather or break the tabs. Remove the trays.

7. Remove the handset as shown.

8. Using a thin screwdriver, gently release the locking tabs for the Eject Box as shown, while lifting up on the rear of the Eject Box.

9. Gently pull the Eject Box up and to the rear to free it from the lip at the front, as shown. Do not try to remove the Eject Box yet. It should only be free from these mounting points.

10. Remove the two screws at the rear of the armrest carrier as shown.

11. Raise the rear of the armrest carrier slightly a gently push it forward to free it from the bracket in the console.

12. Release the two cables from the clips on the armrest carrier as shown.

13. From the underside of the armrest carrier, carefully disconnect the 8-pin modular plug and the 10-pin MID connector, as shown. Do not use force, or the mounting tabs will break.

14. Slide the armrest backwards on its carrier about halfway, as shown, so that the two holes for the Eject Box wiring are in the middle of the square opening of the carrier.

15. Remove the Eject Box from the armrest, feeding the two cables through the holes in the carrier as shown.

16. Important!
From this point on, until the Eject Box is reassembled, anti-static precautions must be observed. Use an anti-static mat (P/N 88 88 6 900 333) connected to a good ground, as shown.

17. Remove the single housing screw (1) as shown, using a Phillips screwdriver.

18. Using a thin-bladed screwdriver inserted into the notches as shown, release each of the six release tabs by applying slight pressure.

19. Grasp the top and bottom housings at the front end of the Eject Box and gently separate the Be careful not to damage the ribbon connector joining the two housings as shown.

20. Locate the EPROM (near the center of the board, and the only socketed IC on the board) Remove it using the IC removal tool (P/N 88 88 0 000 045) as shown. This tool was sent to you under the Automatic Tool Shipment Program. Refer to S.I. 04 17 95 (4257).

21. Insert the new EPROM into the socket by pressing straight down on the center of the part. Pay close attention to the orientation of the "cut-off" corner of the EPROM, as shown, so that the EPROM is correctly positioned in the socket.

22. Reassemble the unit by inserting the two end locking tabs into the corresponding slots in the top housing. Keeping the Eject "flip" depressed will make assembly easier. Press the remaining tabs closed, making sure that the ribbon connector is not pinched between the housing or otherwise damaged. Static protection may now be removed.

23. Reinstall the Phillips screw (1) as shown.

24. With a black marker, cross out the BMW Part Number, Motorola Part Number, and Revision Numbers on the label (1) as shown. The only text remaining should be "BMW", "Made In Germany", and the "MSN" number.

25. Place the new label (beginning with "SLN6967B") over the BMW Part Number label, (2), as shown.

26. Reassemble the Eject Box and all armrest components in reverse order of disassembly. Make sure that the Eject Box wiring is routed through the channel in the rear of the armrest carrier as shown.

27. Turn the ignition and lights on. Check to make sure that the two symbols at the front of the Eject Box illuminate with the lights on. If not, the ribbon connector (see Step 21, above) may have been damaged. Turn the lights off.

28. Perform an "Eject Box Upload" by the following procedure:

^ Turn ignition off.

^ Turn ignition on.

^ Press "FCN", "MENU", 9, 0, "STO" on the handset.

If the upload was not successful, turn the telephone power off at the handset, then turn the telephone on again using the "TEL" button at the MID and perform the upload again.

29. Insert the Supplement Page included in the Eject Box Update Kit into the BMW Cellular Phone Owner's Manual, and place the included audio tape in the glove compartment.
