YOU SHOULD PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETIN WHENEVER AN AFFECTED VEHICLE IS IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIR.

SUBJECT:
Replacing Electronic Throttle Control Module (EML)

MODELS:
850CSi (E31)

Situation:

In 850CSi vehicles, the EML Control Module carries out a continuous program test (RAM check) while the ignition is switched "on." This test consists of writing test data into RAM addresses. Due to a hardware error EML stores incorrect values intermittently and only for a short period of 8/100 second.

If the engine is shut down during this 8/100 second period, these incorrect values will not be corrected after a restart.

When restarting the engine, the now incorrect values in the RAM addresses cause a fault in the function "learn pedal stop."

Effect:

Although the engine can be started and run at idle speed, it shows no response to accelerator pedal movement.

Vehicles Affected:

85OCSi (E31) vehicles produced 6/93 through 12/94.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communications System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

Model Chassis Number Ranges

850CSi(E31) CD 00001 - CD 00149

Correction:

Replace EML Control Module with one having a modified program. Note:Since January 1995, only modified EML Control Modules have been used in series production.

Service Action Label Instructions:

This Service Action is assigned code number 139. After the vehicle is checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-050) and:

a) Emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1).

b) Punch out code number 139 printed on the label (2).

c) Affix the label to the B pillar as shown:

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/recall Campaign, affix the label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
