Removal and Replacement
REMOVING AND INSTALLING ENGINECAUTION: Disconnecting the battery will cancel (clear) the memory of control units which have diagnostic trouble code capabilities. Be sure to interrogate all control units for possible diagnostic trouble codes prior to disconnecting the battery.
BMW anti-theft radios can be rendered useless by disconnecting the battery. Make sure you know the correct code before disconnecting the battery. See your owner's manual for more information.
- Disconnect negative battery lead.
- Disconnect damper on hood, lift engine hood into assembly position and secure with a screw on left and right sides.
- Remove left and right heat baffle plates on front axle support.
- Unfasten drain plug for coolant in left and right engine block.
- Drain and dispose of coolant.
Installation Note: Replace seals, torque drain plugs to 28 ± 2 Nm (21 ± 1 ft lb).
- Remove transmission.
- Remove complete radiator.
- Remove left and right upper sections of intake filter housing with mass air flow sensor.
- Remove complete main flow oil filter.
- Unfasten screw and remove bracket from coolant hose.
- Unfasten hose clips (1 to 3) and remove coolant hoses from end wall of heating unit.
- Unfasten hose clip and remove coolant hose from back of coolant manifold.
- Unfasten cable tie (1) and hose clip (2). Remove vacuum hose for brake booster on manifold.
- Disconnect plug connections (1 and 2) on heating valve.
- Pull heating valve out of bracket and remove with coolant hoses.
- Remove engine section of wiring harness.
- Remove positive battery lead between starter motor and alternator and positive battery lead from underside of vehicle.
- Remove exhaust pipes, Removing Exhaust Pipes
- Remove alternator drive belt.
- Remove compressor drive belt from air conditioner.
- Remove cooling air guide from alternator.
- Remove vane pump for power steering.
- Disconnect a/c compressor from mounting block and tie up to one side.
NOTE: Lines remain connected.
- Secure engine to special tool 11 0 000.
CAUTION: Only raise engine on locating lugs provided for this purpose.
- Unfasten ground strap from engine support.
- Unfasten top left and right nuts on engine mount.
CAUTION:
Note narrow areas between lines on ABS unit, air conditioning compressor with lines, cylinder head cover and steering spindle.
Carefully lift out engine.
- Reinstall all auxiliary components in reverse order of disassembly, paying close attention to installation notes and torque specs.
