328i Introduction

The 1996 model year, 6 cylinder, 3 series vehicles are equipped with the new M52, 2.8 liter engine. The engine management system for the M52 engine is designated MS 41.1 which is manufactured by Siemens.

These vehicles are all designated 328;

- 328i - 4 door sedan,
- 328is - 2 door coupe,
- 328i Convertible

The new M52 engine is mated to either:

- S5D 310Z, (ZF type C) 5 speed manual gearbox as introduced on the 1995 M3. This manual gearbox has an increased torque rating to meet the needs of the new engine's increased torque output.

Gear Ratio
1st 4.20:1
2nd 2.49:1
3rd 1.66:1
4th 1.24:1
5th 1.00:1
Reverse 3.89:1

The gearbox ratios are slightly different compared with the previous Getrag S5D 250G. The final drive ratio of a manual gearbox equipped vehicle has been the changed from 3.15:1 to 2.93:1 for optimized fuel efficiency.

- A4S 270R, Turbo Hydramatic 4 speed automatic transmission. This transmission retains the same design and functions as the previous A4S 310 R. The reduced torque rating meets the requirements of the M52 engine while reducing costs. This transmission will replace the A4S 310 R in all 3 series vehicles including the 318i/is.

Additional Changes For The 328 Include:

Automatic Climate Control System (E36 IHKA):

Automatic Climate Control System:

The new automatic air conditioning system is standard on all 328i/is and replaces the familiar E36 IHKR on 318i/is (IHKS systems remain on roadster and 318ti.).

Bumpers/Rocker Panels: The bumpers and rocker panels are entirely painted in the body color (previously grey).

Seatbelts with automatic locking retractors: With the exception of the driver's seat, all seatbelts will be fitted with automatic locking retractors for child restraint seats. This locking feature is activated by fully reeling the belt out of its retractor. Install the child seat as stated by the manufacture and latch the belt. Allow the belt to reel in until the childseat is firmly held by the belt. To unlock this feature, unlatch the buckle and allow the belt to reel in.

Freewheeling door locks:

Freewheeling Door Locks:

C33 DIN Radio:

All E36 models are now equipped with this feature which was first introduced on the E38. If an incorrect key or object (screwdriver) is placed in the door lock for forcible entry, the cylinder freewheels to minimize damage and unauthorized lock operation.

Fuel tank: The fuel tank capacity has been reduced by 0.8 gallons providing a total capacity of 16.4 US gallons.

C33 DIN Radio:

The audio system is a new Alpine unit designated C33 DIN. The radio faceplate is redesigned with three rocker buttons providing 6 presets (6 AM, 12 FM and 6 automatic FM). The automatic presets pick up the strongest signals in the area. The radio also includes a weather band (WB) button.

ZKE IV, increased scope of operation: The familiar ZKE IV system found on 3 series vehicles includes the following increase in functionality;

- Central locking button on center console.
- Complete activation of door locking system from trunk lock location.
- One touch opening of the sunroof from sunroof switch.
- Comfort closing of vehicle from either door lock location including sunroof.
