SUBJECT:
M52 Engine Control Module Fault Code 12

MODEL:
E36-328i and E39 - 528i with M52 Engine

Situation:

The customer complaint will indicate the following:

^ ASC lamp is illuminated
^ "Check Engine" lamp is illuminated
^ Upon checking for fault codes the following are found

Fault Code 12 - "Throttle valve potentiometer" (in the DME)
Fault Code 154 - "CAN accelerator pedal setting" (in the EGS/AGS)
Fault Code 57 - "Throttle valve signal from DME" (in ASC/ABS)

Cause:

A software error in the DME results in an erroneous setting of fault code 12 in the DME.

Correction:

Replacement of EWS will not address this problem. A MODIC programming disk containing the updated software is under development and will be available 11/96. The updated software will also be available with CD 9.0 programming 1/97. Until the updated software is available:

Contact the Technical Hotline to receive an exchange DME. It is imperative that you return the complaint DME to us immediately to ensure the success of this program.

The latest software will be introduced into production as of 11/96.
