Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair

On models with Automatic Speed Control and Traction Control(ASC+T), remove throttle body to prevent damage when removing transmission.

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove exhaust system.
2. Remove heat shield and exhaust mounting brackets.
3. Remove propeller shaft front joint disc to transmission bolts. To prevent propeller shaft vibration do not apply twisting force to flange when removing nuts from bolts.
4. Using removal tool No. 26 1 040, or equivalent, loosen propeller shaft sliding joint gland nut several turns.
5. Loosen center mount bolts, then bend down propeller shaft on center mount and pull off of centering pin on transmission final drive. Do not allow propeller shaft to over flex at joints during removal, damage to joint boots could result.
6. Suspend propeller shaft from vehicle with wire.
7. Pull off shifter connection retainer and washer, then remove shift rod.
8. Leaving pressure pipes connected, remove clutch slave cylinder and position aside.
9. Pull wires off of reverse gear switch and loosen oxygen sensor plug holder.
10. Remove air collection box, then the injection pipe cover.
11. Support rear of engine and loosen crossmember bolts, then install engine support tool No. 11 0 030, or equivalent, through intake manifold into holder on crankcase.
12. Install engine support tool No. 00 0 200, or equivalent, to engine and tighten spindle to support weight of engine.
13. Remove crossmember with rubber mounts. Lower transmission by turning spindle. Ensure there is no contact with engine compartment wall or heater connections.
14. Remove transmission to engine mounting Torx bolts, then the transmission.
15. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Tighten propeller shaft gland nut, then preload center bearing 0.157-0.235 inch toward front of vehicle before tightening center bearing retaining bolts.
b. Ensure transmission is centered to crossmember.
c. Ensure Torx type transmission to engine bolts are installed with a washer.
d. Ensure engine to transmission alignment dowels are in good condition.
