Sunroof


The E38 sunroof design is similar to the previous BMW sunroofs.

The E38 sunroof assembly is 15mm shallower then the unit in the E32, which provides more headroom.

Additionally, the E38 sunroof incorporates all of the safety and convenience features found on other BMW models.







- The headliner moves back approximately 120mm in vent position (E36) to provide quiet ventilation.







- The water drain channel is raised in the vent position. When the brakes are applied the drain channel prevents any accumulated water on the roof from entering the vehicle cabin.







- In the full open position the panel recedes into the roof cavity 450mm.
- The E38 sunroof motor drive features anti-trap protection.

The operation of this feature is identical to that of the E31.

The effective area of anti-trap protection is from 200mm to 4mm in the closing direction. When an obstruction is present within this area the motor reverses its operation for 1 second allowing the removal of the object.
