Engine Design Specifications
The M62 is the latest BMW engine upgrade and follows the M73, M44 and M52 engines which include design changes intended to:
^ Provide improved fuel economy
^ Comply with current and future U.S. standards for emission control Reduce emission and noise levels
The M62 is being produced in two displacement configurations:
^ M62B35 - 3.5 liter
^ M62B44 - 4.4 liter
However, the M62B44 will be the only displacement offered for the 1996 model year.
The engine will be used in the following models:
^ E31 - 840Ci
^ E38 - 740 i/iL
^ E39 - 540i
The 740i/iL and 840Ci models will be introduced as of 1/96 and the 540i will be introduced in 4/96.
In addition to a larger bore and stroke for the increased displacement, several other modifications were made to the V8 engine to reduce the noise level and emissions while improving the fuel economy. The horsepower remains the same while the torque output has increased and maximum torque is available at a lower RPM.
The M62 will use the M5.2 engine management system that complies with the new 1996 OBD II emission control regulations. Operation of the system is similar to the M5.2 introduced with the M73 - V12 engine.
