PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETIN WHENEVER AN AFFECTED VEHICLE IS IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIR. THIS PROCEDURE SHOULD ALSO BE PERFORMED ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES IN DEALER INVENTORY PRIOR TO CUSTOMER DELIVERY

THE INFORMATION CONTAINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETIN SHOULD ALSO BE DISTRIBUTED TO ALL SERVICE ADVISORS IMMEDIATELY.

SUBJECT:
One or Both Rear Power Windows Inoperative

MODELS:
5 Series (E39) vehicles produced 3/96 through 7/96;
7 Series (E38) vehicles produced 1/96 through 7/96.

Situation:

One or both rear door power windows do not operate. The rear window operation can fail in either the up or down position.

Cause:

A Software error in General Modules (GM III) using Software 1.1 through 1.4 can cause excessive running time of either or both rear window regulators, resulting in damage to the motors.

Vehicles Affected:

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges illustrated are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

*Parts Information:

Part Number Description Quantity

61 35 8 376 638 } General Module 1
61 35 8 380 518 }*

Correction:

1. Using the DIS Tester or MoDiC, determine the software version of the General Module.

2. If the software version of the General Module is 1.1 through 1.4, replace the General Module with one of Software Version 1.5 or higher (P/N 61 35 8 376 638).

Note:
Replacement of the General Module will not restore function to a damaged rear window regulator. If repairs to window regulators are necessary, they must be claimed separately, not as part of this campaign.

Also, the rear door locks will be inoperative if the fuse for the rear door power windows is defective (E38 = Fuse 29; E39 = Fuse 27).

3. Initialize all (up to four) Remote Transmitters (Master Keys) to the replacement GM.

Both (or all) transmitters must be initialized at the same time.

Important:
Whenever a customer schedules an appointment for any work which could possibly result in the replacement of a General Module, the customer should be advised to bring all Remote Transmitters (Master Keys) in with the vehicle.

This will avoid the necessity of a second visit to the workshop to initialize the transmitters.

To initialize the Remote Transceivers, proceed as follows:

Using the DIS Tester, select "Body", "Body Electrical Systems", "Locking and Security Systems"

Select "Test Schedule"

Select "3 Service Functions"

Select "3 Initialization"

Follow the displayed procedure exactly!

Service Action Label Instructions:

This Service Action has been assigned code number 182. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-085) and:

a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b) punch out code number 182 printed on the label and,

c) affix the label to the B pillar as shown:

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

Warranty Information:

Reimbursement shall be through Campaign Entry.
