SUBJECT:
One or Both Rear Power Windows Inoperative
MODELS:
5 Series (E39) vehicles produced 3/96 through 7/96;
7 Series (E38) vehicles produced 1/96 through 7/96.
Situation:
One or both rear door window(s) do(es) not operate. The window(s) can fail in either the up or down position.
Cause:
A Software error in General Modules (GM III) using Software 1.1 or 1.2 can cause excessive running time or either or both rear window regulators, resulting in damage to the motors.
Correction:
If the above-described situation is encountered, proceed as follows:
1. Using the DIS Tester or MoDiC, determine the software version of the General Module.
2. Check the fuse for the rear door power windows (E38 = Fuse 29; E39 = Fuse 27). Replace if defective.
Note:
The rear door locks will also be inoperative if the fuse for the rear door windows is defective.
3. If the software version of the General Module is 1.1 or 1.2, replace the General Module (P/N 61 35 8 374 813) with one marked with a yellow dot. This GM incorporates a Hardware change which corrects the Software error.
4. Operate the rear door windows. Troubleshoot as per the DIS Tester, and replace defective window regulators as necessary.
Warranty Information:
Parts and Labor are reimbursable under the terms of the BMW New Car Limited Warranty of 4 years/50,000 miles.
Note:
If both rear window regulators must be replaced in the same vehicle, please use the Associated work Labor Operation (51 37 620) in addition to the Main Work Labor Operation (51 37 000).
