Automatic Starting
The automatic starting feature of the M73 engine is controlled by DME M5.2. This new feature requires the driver to momentarily turn the ignition key to the Start Position (KL 50) and release it.
Both DME control modules activate the "One Touch" starter relay control circuit for up to 30 seconds or until the engine starts.
If the engine starts within the 30 second duration1 the DME control modules recognize the increase in engine speed from the crankshaft speed input and de-energize the One Touch starter relay.
If after 30 seconds the engine does not start, the DME control modules will de-energize the One Touch starter relay to prevent overheating of the starter motor. With another momentary KL 50 input, the starting process occurs again.
If during the 30 second start procedure the driver requires that the engine stop cranking, the key is simply turned to OFF.
The automatic start feature prevents the continued engagement of the starter motor by continued activation of KL 50 (key being held in the KL 50 position after engine start).
The automatic start feature is dependent on the EWS systems recognition of the correct key and properly coded DME control modules.
