Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures
CHECKING THE BASICSEnsure battery, starter and alternator connections are correct and in good condition. Check engine to body ground strap connections. Check alternator drive belt before performing these procedures.
CHARGE INDICATOR LAMP NOT ON W/IGNITION ON
1. Disconnect alternator electrical plug connector.
2. Using a jumper wire, connect terminal D+/61 with ground terminal 31.
3. If charge lamp comes on:
a. Check carbon brushes.
b. Check slip rings for dirt or oxidation.
c. Check voltage regulator for proper operation.
4. If lamp does not come on:
a. Check indicator lamp bulb.
b. Check wire harness for open or short to ground.
CHARGE INDICATOR LAMP ON W/IGNITION OFF
1. Replace diode plate.
CHARGE INDICATOR LAMP GLOWS OR ON W/IGNITION OFF
1. Check regulator voltage, replace regulator as necessary.
2. Repair or replace alternator assembly.
3. Check regulator voltage, replace voltage regulator as necessary.
4. Check battery, replace as necessary.
