Replacing DME Control Unit
Replacing control module (DME) (M40, M42, M43, M44)
Comply with instructions for removal and installation of electronic control modules and comply with instructions on disconnecting and reconnecting battery.
ECU Replacement Notes
Before replacing the control module, always comply with the following instructions:
Encode control module,
Encoding Control Module (DME)
Program control module,
Program Control Module (DME)
CAUTION!
Always interrogate fault memory with BMW DIS or MoDiC and print out results.
Switch off ignition.
Unscrew bolts.
Fold cover with wiring harness to one side.
NOTE: Control units are located behind battery holder in engine compartment.
Lift locking clamp of plug-in connection in upwards direction.
Disconnect connector.
Pull control unit out of clips (retaining screws on retaining clips do not need to be unfastened).

Installation:
Check control unit part number and coding when replacing.
Interrogate fault memory of DME-control unit, check faults in memory then cancel fault memory.
Plug-in connection (1) must be inserted when catalytic converter is removed.
The DME control unit then recognizes the output value of the idle speed CO potentiometer.
