PLEASE FAMILIARIZE ALL SERVICE DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL WITH THE INFORMATION CONTAINED IN THIS BULLETIN.

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETIN WHENEVER AN AFFECTED VEHICLE IS IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIR. THIS PROCEDURE SHOULD ALSO BE PERFORMED ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES IN RETAILER INVENTORY PRIOR TO CUSTOMER DELIVERY.

SUBJECT:
Send/Receive (S/E) Module for EWS II

MODEL:
3 Series (E36), 5 Series (E39) - vehicles produced 1/97 - 2/97

Situation:

As of mid-January 1997, EWS II Software Version 3 was introduced into series production. A possible software incompatibility has arisen between the S/E Module and the EWS II Module which could cause one or more of the vehicle's keys to fail to start the engine.

EWS II Software Version 2 was phased back into production during 2/97 production.

Note:
Do not confuse EWS II Software Version 3 with EWS III (introduced 9/96 on E38 models and 3/97 on E39 models). EWS III does not employ a separate S/E Module, as does EWS II.

Vehicles Affected:

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DOS (Dealer Communication System. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered the only deciding factor.

Correction:
Replace the S/E Module (P/N 61 358 379 502) in affected vehicles with EWS II Software Version 3, and replace EWS II Module and all keys if any key is determined to be defective. Refer to the procedure as shown.

Important Note:
Because of the possibility that one of the vehicle's keys could be defective, the customer must be informed that ALL keys must be brought in with the vehicle before the Service Action can be performed. This means that the Service Advisor should check any affected vehicle through DCS when the appointment is made, and AT THAT TIME instruct the customer to bring all the keys in with the vehicle.

Procedure:
With the MoDiC loaded with Diagnosis Version 9.0, proceed as follows:

1. Connect the MoDiC to the vehicle and switch ignition "ON".

2. Select the model range of the vehicle.

3. Select "16 EWS". From the Control Unit Identification Page, press the "right arrow" and read the Software Version number.

If the Software Version is 2, the vehicle needs no repairs. Proceed to "Service Action Label Instructions".

If the Software Version is 3, proceed to Step 4.

4. Replace the S/E Module. Refer to Repair Manual, Operation 61 35 905.

5. Start the engine using each of the four keys supplied with the vehicle (also check any additional keys that have been ordered by the customer). You must wait at least 10 seconds after switching off the ignition before trying the next key.

6. If any key is unsuccessful in starting the engine, the EWS II Control Module and all keys must be replaced. Refer to Repair Manual, Operation 61 35 910.

Service Action Label Instructions:

This Service Action has been assigned code number 196. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-085) and:

a) emboss your BMW retailer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b) punch out code number 196 printed on the label and,

c) affix the label to the B pillar as shown:

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
