Crankshaft
The crankshaft of the M44 engine has been modified to reduce its oscillating masses. This provides a quieter, smoother running engine.
The crankshaft is made of cast iron with 5 main bearings and 4 counter weights (the M42 engine was forged steel with 8 counter weights).
The stroke of the crankshaft is increased to 83.5 mm.

The engine speed/reference wheel is now bolted directly to the rear counter weight of the crankshaft.
