Cylinder Block

Cylinder Block:

The design of the cylinder block is similar to the M50 version. The M52 is being introduced with a cast iron block.

The bore remains at 84 mm, while the stroke has been lengthened from 75 to 84 mm. This provides for the displacement increase of 0.3 liters to 2.8.

The cylinder block incorporates a bore and mounting boss on the left rear side for mounting the Crankshaft position sensor for the MS41.1 control module.

An aluminum alloy block is planned for future use with the M52 engine. The aluminum block will offer weight saving advantages over the cast version.

Piston crown cooling is now provided by hook type jets that continuously spray oil to the piston while the engine is running. They are bolted into the main oil supply channel in the block.

The lower end of the block is reinforced with steel plates at each main bearing cap. These plates provide increased lower end rigidity.
