Crankshaft
Crankshaft:
The crankshaft of the M52 is forged steel, featuring 7 main bearings and 12 counter weights. The steel crankshaft is employed for increased stiffness and improved vibration damping characteristics.
Trigger Wheel:
The trigger wheel for the crankshaft position sensor is bolted directly to the crankshaft on the rear main counter weight. Consequently, the vibration damper is no longer used for crankshaft speed / reference monitoring though the vibration damper still has the incremental wheel.
The trigger wheel/position sensor configuration is employed to meet the misfire detection requirements of the OBD II regulations.
