THIS SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETIN CONCERNS CODING PROBLEMS THAT MAY BE ENCOUNTERED IN A VARIETY OF SITUATIONS. PLEASE ENSURE THAT ALL SERVICE PERSONNEL IN YOUR DEALERSHIP ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE CONTENTS OF THIS BULLETIN.
SUBJECT:
Coding Replacement Control Module not possible with Coding Program
"ZCS C 7.0"
MODEL:
5 Series (E39) - vehicles produced 6/96 and later
Situation:
1. When replacing a control module (other than an IHKA Control Module) which has been found to be defective in an E39 vehicle, the replacement control module cannot be coded.
The following failure message is displayed by the DIS or MODIC:
"No Coding Data Available for this Coding Key
Do you want to continue coding Y/N?
Please enter code"
2. When attempting to code a replacement IHKA Control Module, the coding software can recognize the module only as an IHR Control Module.
Cause:
During mid-June 1996, the Central Coding key for E39 vehicles was changed relating to the identification of the Integrated Climate Regulation (IHKA) Control Module.
Such changed Central Coding Keys (in E39 vehicles produced June 1996 and later) cannot be recognized by the present Coding Program "ZCS C 7.0", and coding of replacement control modules cannot be carried out.
Correction:
1. When the message "No Coding Data Available for this Coding Key Do you want to continue coding Y/N? Please enter code" is displayed on the DIS or MODIC, you must select "Yes" and then enter a separate "override" code (not to be confused with the Central Coding Key) for any Control Module to be coded after replacement. The same is true for the "Retrofit" and "Conversion" selection menus. After the respective "override" code is entered the Control Module coding can be carried out.
A listing of these override codes follows, and will allow the use of Coding Program ZCS C 7.0 for coding Control Modules in affected vehicles. These override codes must be used when using the conversion path on affected vehicles.
2. The IHKA Control Module cannot be correctly coded using Coding Program ZCS C 7.0 in an affected vehicle. As a result of the changed Coding Key, the Coding Program will always recognize only an IHR System installed in an affected E39 vehicle.
If it becomes necessary to replace an IHKA Control Module in an affected vehicle before Coding Program ZCS C 8.0 is available, a pre-coded Control Module must be ordered.
Note:
Coding Program ZCS C 8.0 will correct these problems.
