SUBJECT:
Check Control Message: "Check Engine Oil Level"
MODEL:
5 Series (E39), 7 Series (E39) - with M62 B44 Engine, produced prior to May 1996.
Situation:
The Check Control Message "Check Engine Oil Level" may appear when the engine oil level is only slightly below the maximum level.
Cause:
Faulty support values in the Lamp Check Module (LCM) for the thermal oil level sensor. These values can be corrected by recoding the LCM, preventing the erroneous Check Control message from reappearing.
Vehicles Affected:
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
Correction:
Recode the Lamp Check Module (LCM).
Note:
This fault will not be corrected by replacing the thermal oil level sensor.
Procedure:
1. Enter Date (MoDiC only)
2. Select Series (e.g., E38)
3. Select "1. Recoding"
4. Select "14 LCM"
5. Confirm "Assign LCM to vehicle"
6. Confirm VIN and Central Coding Key
7. Start Automatic Coding (confirm with "Y")
8. Switch ignition off, wait at least 10 seconds, and switch ignition on again.
Note:
Clear any faults stored in the LCM Fault Memory.
Service Action Label Instructions:
This Service Action has been assigned code number 178. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-085) and:
a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b) punch out code number 178 printed on the label and,
c) affix the label to the B pillar as shown:
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
Warranty Information:
Reimbursement shall be through Campaign Entry.
