Cellular Phone: Description and Operation




CMT 3000VR TELEPHONE







The new Cellular Mobile Telephone for the E38 is the GMT 3000VR. The CMT 3000VR was specifically designed for BMW's new flagship. The phone will be a dealer installed option for the 740i/iL and port installed as standard equipment on the 750iL.

The CMT 3000VR is the next generation mobile phone for BMW vehicles. The phone system is integrated into the vehicle by way of the I-Bus allowing shared functions of the multi-information display and the multifunction steering wheel and instrument cluster.

Many of the CMT 3000VR features will carry over into later BMW mobile phones such as:

- I-Bus Interface: The telephone is linked to the:
- IKE, for display of telephone numbers in the Matrix display.
- MID, for telephone number display and system control.
- MFL, for control at the steering wheel.
- Radio/Amplifier. for automatic muting and audio system speaker use when in hands free operation.

- Road Speed Sensitive Volume: When in hands-free operation the volume of the telephone will increase slightly with an increase in road speed. The Eject box receives Speed signal "A" from the IKE for monitoring vehicle speed.

COMPONENTS







The system is made up of the following:

- Handset

The handset is different in appearance 1 the previous CMT 1000 phone in the area of the key pad. The number key pad now at the bottom of the handset while the function keys are now on top.

The arrangement of the display is also different. The row of LED indicators are now at the top.

- Eject Box

The Eject box has a unique feature which allows the handset to be flush with the top of the armrest when the handset is not in use. When the pushbutton located at the forward edge is pressed the box ejects the the handset from the armrest for use.

The eject box also houses the interface electronics which reduces the electrical componentry in the center console area.

- Transceiver

The transceiver is mounted on the left side of the trunk next to the CD player. Its appearance is identical to the CMT 1000VR transceiver but is only compatible with the CMT 3000VR system.

- Antenna







The E38 uses a new style rear window mounted antenna. At this time the antenna is available only for the E38 and offers a distinctive styling difference to previous antennas.

- Hands-free Microphone







Positioned in the trim panel next to the sunroof switch is the hands free microphone.

This location offers good sound reception and a factory installed appearance.

THREE METHODS OF TELEPHONE OPERATION

The phone system is designed to be a convenient integrated system. Telephone operation can be achieved from every person in the vehicle.

Multi-function Steering Wheel (MFL)







The driver can conveniently operate the telephone by using the multi-function steering wheel controls.

The "R/T" button is provided on the MFL to toggle between radio/telephone operation When this button is pressed the instrument cluster will display the stored telephone numbers in memory.

The smaller button with the handset icon is the "Send/End" button. When pressed, the phone will automatically place a call to the displayed telephone number in the instrument cluster display.

Multi-information Display (MID)

The MID offers a convenient location for driver or front seat passenger control. The MID performs the same functions as the MFL and additionally it can:
- Dial telephone numbers from the key pad.
- Enter and save a number into the MID note pad, then place the call from the note pad.
- Activate the MID individual call timer.
- Display the signal strength meter.
- Memorize the eight most frequently called numbers placed from the MID and display their Alpha tags in the MID opening menu screen.

Handset

The handset is located centrally in the vehicle for convenient usage from any seat in the car. Though the handset has a new look, it primarily functions the same as previous BMW cellular telephone handsets. The handset is the only component that can program the phone system.
