Rear Door: Adjustments

41 52 004 Adjusting Left Or Right Rear Door

NOTE:
- The flaps and doors are fitted and screwed into the unfinished body shell.
- Unpainted surfaces become visible after subsequent movement.
- These surfaces must be touched up with paint in the body color.

NOTE:
- On 4-door models, it is important to align the rear doors first.
- The reason for this is that the rear doors must be aligned to the welded rear side walls.
- The front doors must then be aligned to the rear doors.
- The bolted front side walls can then be adapted if necessary to the front doors.

The illustrations do not always correspond to the type of vehicle selected in the TIS.
The illustrations are therefore to be viewed as basic illustrations which are to be carried over to the relevant vehicle type.

CAUTION:
- Keep to the sequence of procedures for correct alignment of doors. Finish off doors with window regulators and window panels etc.
- Door settling behavior depends on weight.
- Loosen strikers.

Gap dimensions,
refer to Gap dimensions of doors/hood and luggage compartment lid
refer to Window and door seams

Always first adjust alignment of the rear door and then the front door.
Adjust front doors to fit.
Completely remove door seal (hose seal) from rear door.

CAUTION: It is permitted to carry out minor straightening corrections to the doors if the existing adjustment options are inadequate.

Extensive straightening would lead to the doors becoming "soft" and cause them to lose their tension on a long term basis. At high road speed and with strong side wind, the door frame could then lift off of the hose seal.
This will result in excessive wind noises.

Use shims (1) between doors and hinges when installing new doors.
Distance for rough adjustment:
Front door:
Fit 2 spacers, each 1 mm thick
Rear door
Fit 2 spacers, each 1 mm thick
Adjust to specified distance by installing shim in appropriate quantity and/or thickness.

Rear Door:
Lower door window.
Adjust height of door roughly when installing new doors.
Without dust strip at bottom of door, uniform gap (A) approx. 20 mm.
Tighten nuts on upper and lower door hinges.

Check gap (B) and correct if necessary. Gap (B): approx. 5 mm uniformly.

Check door height - flush - and correct if necessary.

Correction:
Loosen striker.
Loosen nuts on hinge (1) and turn door.
In case of considerable deviation, correct thickness of spacer on hinge (2).
Tighten nuts.

Position of door relative to rocker panel:
Door must run parallel to rocker panel.
Correction:
Loosen nuts on hinge (2).
Correct the quantity and/or thickness of shims.
Tighten nuts.
Check previous adjustment once again and correct if necessary.

Preset striker.
Door height: flush.
Door overlap: 0-1 mm
Tighten screws on striker.

Adjusting rear striker:
Insert special tool (gauge) 51 2 090 in door lock.

Loosen screw (1). Loosen screw (2) until it is just possible to keep moving striker with moderate hand pressure.

CAUTION: Do not alter striker depth adjustment (3).

Lift door handle, hold tight and shut the door. Striker height and inclination are adjusted by the gauge.
Open door. Tighten screws (1) and (2).

NOTE: Adjusting strikers with gauge remedies "striker grating noise".

Check door seal (hose seal) for damage, repair if necessary.
Install door seal (hose seal).
Mount dust strip at bottom of door.
