Hood: Adjustments

41 61 014 Aligning Engine Hood

NOTE:
- Engine hood was fitted and bolted in an unfinished body shell.
- Unpainted surfaces become visible after subsequent movement.
- These surfaces must be touched up with paint in the body color.

Code on aluminum engine hood: Clinch points on edge of engine hood. With aluminium parts, refer to:
Basic comments on handling aluminium components
Notes on repairs on aluminium parts

Adjust detent screws on left and right screw connection (1) to dimension (A).
A = 16 ± 1 mm

NOTE: Detent buffer (2) must not be damaged. Replace hinge if necessary.

CAUTION:
- Bowden cable on both hood locks must be set to zero backlash.
- Entire sleeve on Bowden cable must locate in guide in lock, otherwise, when release lever is pulled, Bowden cable slips into guide and it is no longer possible to open locks.

Adjust cable on adjusting fixture to be without play.

CAUTION: Cable must not have tension.

If necessary, adjust actuating stroke of Bowden cable.

Turn back detent buffer without ejector.
Detent buffer with ejector:
Press ejector into detent buffer and, in this position, twist slightly to left with a Phillips screwdriver.
This locks the ejectors in the detent buffers.

Fitting in engine hood:

CAUTION: Do not damage intermediate plate between hinge and hood: replace if necessary.

Loosen bolts (1 and 2) of left and right hinges.

NOTE: If the adjusting range is not sufficient, loosen engine hood mounting bolts on body and adjust hinge on body.

Align hood lid against front side panels at same seam width with parallel seams, refer to gap dimensions doors / Front and trunk lid.

Align hood lid against front side panels.
The hood lid should close flush with the front side panels beside the headlights.
Tolerance - 1 mm, i.e the hood lid must be set 1 mm back from the side panels.

Align hood lid with front side panels.
The hood lid beside the windshield should seal flush with the side panels at the front.
1 = Front lid
2 = Side panel, front
This arises as a result of adjustment of hood lid beside headlights.

NOTE: Adjustment of hood lid next to headlights must always be within specified tolerance range.

Retighten loosened bolts.

Adjust height of engine hood on the hinges: Close engine hood carefully. Measure height of hood lid at (B).
Dimension (A) = 200 mm from the relevant outside edge of the side panel (on headlight or on windshield).
The hood lid should be set to the same height as the front side panels in area (B).
Tolerance - 1 mm, i.e. hood lid must lie 1 mm below side panels.

Measure height setting of hood lid (1) relative to front side panels (2) beside the windshield.
The hood lid (1) should be set 3 mm lower than the front side panels front (2) beside the windshield.
Tolerance - 1 mm, i.e. the hood lid must lie 4 mm lower than the side panels in this area.
This arises as a result of adjustment of hood lid next to (B).

Determine height setting in area (B), measure deviation and open the hood lid.
Secure engine hood.

CAUTION: If engine hood is not secured, body and windshield can be damaged.

Unfasten screws (1) and (2) and fit or remove suitable number of washers to correct the deviation in height setting.
Tighten loosened screws consecutively on left and right sides.
Close engine hood, check height setting and correct if necessary.

Height adjustment of engine hood on hood locks:
Close engine hood carefully.
Determine height setting.
The hood lid should be at the same height as the front side panels beside the headlights.
Tolerance - 1 mm, i.e. hood lid must lie 1 mm below side panels.
Measure deviation.

Raise engine hood.
Unfasten screw (1) and remove locking device (2).

Unfasten locking device until deviation from height setting has been corrected.
Perform operation on left and right sides.

Refit locking device.
Close hood lid, check height beside the headlights and correct if necessary.

Measure and, if necessary, correct distance (A) = engine hood protrusion beyond the headlight lens.
Dimension (A) = approx. 2 mm

Detent buffer without ejector:
Unscrew detent buffer until hood lid is flush with detent buffer.
Detent buffer with ejector:
Unscrew detent buffer until hood lid is flush with detent buffer and ejector.
Gently twist ejector in detent buffers to right with Phillips screwdriver. This unlocks the detent buffers, enabling ejector to emerge.

To adjust protrusion, loosen nut (1), untighten adjusting nuts (3) and align headlight to appropriate extent.

CAUTION: Do not apply distorting load to headlight: if necessary adjust lower screws (2).

Check headlight adjustment and adjust if necessary.

Perform contact pattern test of left and right fresh air ducts (e.g. with tire mounting paste).

NOTE: Hood lid seal must be a perfect fit, otherwise water and exhaust gases can penetrate the vehicle interior.
