SUBJECT:
Updated TCM/AGS Software for '97 & '98 MY 540iA, 74OiA/iAL Shift Quality
MODEL:
E38, E39 with M62 produced 1/97 - 8/98
Situation:
The following situations may be encountered:
-- Customer complaint of a "hard" 5-4 and/or 3-2 downshift.
-- "Trans Prog." displayed in the matrix.
-- Fault Code 121,123 stored in '97 MY vehicles.
-- Fault Code 56,57 stored in '98 MY vehicles.
Cause:
TCM/AGS calibration
Correction:
Reprogram the TCM/AGS with CD 21.0 or higher.
Procedure:
To perform the programming:
1. Check the TCM/AGS identification screen to obtain the "Master Control Module" number.
2. No further programming is required if the "software number" is either 4245 or 0710.
IMPORTANT
Until further notice, this reprogramming will only work using a "manual determination". If the programming is performed using "automatic determination", the software will not be correctly updated in the '97 or '98 MY 540iA/740iA/iAL. A battery charger should be used when reprogramming.
3. When performing a manual determination, the basic part number entered must match the master control module number.
4. Select:
-- Programming
-- EGS programming
-- Exchange control unit
-- Determine basic control unit
-- "Is faulty control unit installed in car?" a select "NO"
-- Enter part number for basic control unit: (refer to chart)
-- Enter VIN
Programming Numbers for Manual Determination
-- Enter part number for programmed control unit: (refer to chart)
"Basic Control Unit Number" must be the same as the "Master Control Module Number" installed.
-- Program basic control unit (takes approximately 15 minutes)
-- Clear adaptation values

5. Verify correct software number by checking TCM/AGS ID screen:
