Tie Rod: Service and Repair

Replacing center tie rod

Caution! After assembly, measure/adjust front axle alignment.

Unscrew and remove splash guard.
Unfasten nut.





Press tie rod off pitman arm and idler arm with special tool 32 1 190.

Installation:
Replace self-locking nut. Brace on hexagon socket if necessary.
Tightening Torque, refer to Steering Specifications.
Loosen left or right clamping screws.





Unscrew and remove tie rod adjusting thread from left or right tie rod. Installation: Coat tie rod adjusting thread with special grease, use BMW approved.
Measure screw-in length of adjusting thread on old tie rod.
Screw in adjusting thread on new tie rod to appropriate depth in left or right tie rod.
Tightening Torque, refer to Steering Specifications.
