Replacing Front-Axle Carrier


Replacing front-axle carrier

Caution! After installation, align front axle, refer to Alignment.

Disconnect battery, refer to Starting and Charging.
During installation of a new front axle support, the pitman arm can be adjusted, refer to Pitman Arm.
Suspend engine in installation position with special tool.
Described in:
Removing oil sump.
Unscrew and remove splash guard.
Remove front axle support steering gear (lines remain connected), refer to Steering Gear. Unfasten engine mount from front axle support.
Engine M57:
Detach left and right mounting brackets from front axle support.
Remove left or right control arms from front axle support.

Installation:





Fit washers (1) on both sides and replace self-locking nut.
Tightening Torque, refer to Suspension; Specifications.
Remove idler arm

Installation:





Replace self-locking nut.
Tightening Torque, refer to Steering; Specifications.





Remove left or right reinforcement and heat shield.
Remove positive lead on support point.
If applicable, unfasten oil line from front axle support.
Remove traction strut.

Installation:





Fit washer (1) and replace self-locking nut.
Tightening Torque, refer to Suspension; Specifications.
Remove stabilizer from push rod.
Unfasten nut.





Press off left and right track rods with special tool 32 1 190 from steering knuckle and pitman arm.

Installation:
Replace self-locking nut.
Tightening Torque, refer to Steering Specifications.





Unscrew left and right bolts.
Remove front axle support.
Remove stabilizer from front axle support.
