System Operation
System Operation
The two driver settings of "SPORT" or "COMFORT" are still provided for driver selection with the EDC switch.
The operation of the EDC III E38 is similar to the EDC III system already installed in the E31/32s.
Comfort Program
In the comfort program, the priority setting is for soft damping. However, the control module can switch between three different damping forces (soft, medium or hard).
The control module continuously monitors the inputs from the acceleration sensors, wheel speed sensor and steering wheel sensor. Dynamic movements detected by the sensors allow the control module to automatically switch to a harder setting.
The harder setting will remain only long enough to maintain the degree of stability required to maintain operational safety. Once the dynamic forces are reduced, the system will switch back to the comfort setting.
Sport Program
In the sport program the control module selects between the medium and hard setting of damping force. The medium setting is selected until dynamic forces occur that require a harder damping force.
This program selects the hard setting sooner and holds it longer than the comfort program which provides the sport feel and dynamic stability required for a sportier driving style.
