Doors

The basic door is designed to accommodate double pane glass. This eliminates additional parts inventory for a single and dual pane door.

Like the E32, with the electrical harness disconnected, the doors can be removed from the vehicle by separating the door hinges at the pins.

When performing any door adjustments the door must be fully assembled.

All doors incorporate aluminum reinforcement braces to meet the Federal 1997 side impact crash standards.

A further refinement to the side impact standard is the BMW Door Anchoring System.

The door anchoring system includes a metal hook bolted to the end of the rear end of the reinforcement brace.

In the event of a severe side impact the hook grabs a notch in the B pillar or rear quarter (front or rear door respectively).

The front edge of the reinforcement brace is attached to the door hinge brace at the front edge of each door.

The strong door hinges hold the front of the door to the body and complete the anchoring system.

Upon severe impact, the hook locks into the recessed notch to provide a unitized side impact protection system.

After impact, the door springs back and unhooks the notch.

The door is clear of the B pillar and can be opened.
