E38 Fuel System

- Fuel Filter

A new single fuel filter (P/N 13 32 1 702 632) replaces the dual fuel filter configuration of the E32 M60.

The single filter has the same surface area as the dual filters but weighs and costs less. Also with less sealing points (clamps) the possibility of leakage is reduced.

- Fuel Tank

The E38 utilizes a steel version of the proven saddle design fuel tank, located under the rear seat. The battery and other electrical components have been relocated providing a centralized fuel tank location which improves weight distribution and traction.

As it's name implies the tank saddles the drive shaft, creating two separate low points in the tank.

The E38 uses a suction jet to pull the fuel from the drivers' side of the tank to the passenger's side where the single fuel pump is located.

The E38 has a unique procedure for draining the tank when removal from the vehicle is necessary.

Located at the front left vertical surface of the tank is a short length of hose.

This hose is clamped to two internal pipes that are routed to the two low sections on each side of the tank.

Using 2 clamps (special tool 13 3 010) crimp the hose as shown.

Cut the exposed section of the hose as close to the center of the loop as possible.

Connect the cut ends of the hose to a hose and pump and unclamp the hose and allowing the pump to drain each side of the tank.

When reinstalling the tank fit a new piece of hose with clamps on the open fittings.
