Situation:
Government regulations require vehicle manufacturers to monitor the fuel evaporative system for the loss of hydro carbon vapors into the atmosphere by performing a vehicle self-check of the complete system while the engine is in operation.

In the event that a leak is detected within the system that may result in the release of HO vapors into the atmosphere (Example: A loose or missing fuel filler cap), the check Engine " light will be illuminated upon the second consecutive occurrence of such a fault. If the filler cap is reinstalled the "Check Engine" light will go out after the system has gone through a self-check three consecutive times without a fault being detected.

Correction:
In order to raise customer awareness, BMW is asking that the following labels be placed on the fuel filler cap and/or on to the fuel filler door by the Service Advisor whenever a vehicle listed above is at the retailer for service.

Label # 1 (P/N 71 21 2 122 552) - "Loose or missing cap will activate check engine light"

If not already present, place on fuel filler cap.

Label # 2 (P/N 71 21 1 184 663) - "Do not refuel while engine is running!" If not already present, place on fuel filler door.

NOTE:
Many of these vehicles will be reprogrammed due to a Service Action (refer to S.I. 12 10 97 dated 3/98) please place the labels on the vehicle whenever the vehicle is in the shop.

Parts Information:
Each dealer will receive an initial quantity of 200 labels per part number. Additional labels can be order through the PDC at no cost in packets of 200.
