SUBJECT:
Engine Cranks, but will not Start
MODEL:
E38 (740i, 750i), E39 (540i)
Situation:
Vehicles fitted with M62 or M73 engine ([1][2]DME 5.2.1) experience a crank, but no start condition. Engine will usually start if ignition switch is cycled.
1. [1][2]DME fault codes 39 and 204, or
2. [1][2]DME fault code 204/EWS fault code 13
Cause:
1. Rolling code within EWS 3.3 module is not advancing due to software problem with EWS 3.3 Software version 3.
Problem sets [1][2]DME fault codes 39 (EWS 3.3 tampering protection) and 204 (EWS 3.3 random code storage)
2. Poor connection at power distribution box X10202.
Problem sets EWS fault code 13 (EWS power supply) and [1][2]DME fault code 204 (EWS 3.3 random code storage)
Affected Vehicles:
Vehicles produced from 5/97 with M62 or M73 engine ([1][2]DME 5.2.1) (540i, 740i, 750i)

Note:
All BMW parts stock is Software version 5. Retailer may use Software version 4 if this part is in retailer parts stock.
Correction:
1. For vehicles with Cause 1,
Replace EWS module with Software version 4, or higher.
Using DIS tester, code new module, making sure the digits of the code are entered accurately.
If coding difficulties are experienced, select the following DIS ZCS Coding sequence
(New module should remain installed in the vehicle):
Coding
EWS
Replace Control Unit
Read data out of faulty control unit
Is faulty control unit still fitted to vehicle? (NO)
Enter complete VIN
Follow on screen instructions to code unit
Align new module
2. For vehicles with Cause 2,
Disconnect battery.
Remove passenger seat and pull back carpet to access power distribution box X10202 in passenger footwell
Check tightness of terminal nuts.
Tighten to 5 Nm as necessary.
Reposition carpet and reinstall seat
Reconnect the battery
