How Are Engine Control Modules Programmed?

Engine control module programming can be compared to loading a software program into a brand new personal computer (PC).

Prior to loading the software, the PC's hard drive is empty. The PC can not function because there are no instructions (software) for it to carry out.

Loading the software into the PC is accomplished by inserting floppy disc(s) into a disc drive. The contents of the floppy discs are copied to the hard drive. When loading is complete the files are resident in the computer.

This is the same for engine control module programming. The control module is empty until the programming data is installed using the MoDiC. The MoDiC receives the programming data via a download from either the MoDiC station or the DIS.
