Cylinder Heads
CYLINDER HEADS
The cross flow cylinder heads are made of die-cast aluminum and are similar to the heads used on the M60. The cylinder heads continue to feature:
^ Centrally located spark plugs
^ Four valves per cylinder
^ Two camshafts
^ Bucket tappets with hydraulic valve clearance adjusters
The camshaft bearing and bucket tappet supports are cast into the head for simplified assembly and lower production costs.
The combustion chambers are machined into the heads - not cast in. This process ensures more uniform 'matched" combustion chambers and compression pressures.
The design of the cylinder head gasket is changed. It no longer incorporates the gasket for the upper timing case cover.
As on the M60, the cylinder heads for each bank are of different lengths due to the offset of the cylinder rows (cylinder bank 1-4 = shorter).
The cylinder head valve guides can be resurfaced using special tool P/N 90 88 6 004 220 - Valve Guide Reamer.
