Exhaust System: Service and Repair




Removing and Installing Complete Exhaust System (M62)


Necessary Preliminary Tasks:
- Unscrew and remove splash guard.
- Disconnect plug connection for oxygen sensor/monitor on left and right.





Support exhaust system with special tool 31 2 220. (Weight approx. 48kg)





Unfasten mounting on catalytic converter from back of body.

Release nut on rubber mount and remove suspension.


Cars without primary Catalytic Converter on Exhaust Manifold only:
- Unscrew exhaust catalytic converter from left and right sides of exhaust manifolds.
NOTE:



The connections between exhaust manifolds and the catalytic converter are only fitted with sealing rings on the inner tubes.
(1)Without sealing ring (outer)
(2)With sealing ring (inner)

Installation:



Check seals and replace if necessary.
Replace self-locking nuts.
Coat thread with copper paste -CRC-.





- Unfasten hex nut (1 and/or 2).
- Remove complete exhaust system.


Cars with Primary Catalytic Converter on Exhaust Manifold only:





- Release hexagon nuts (1) on exhaust pipe on left and right.

Installation:
Replace self-locking nuts.
Coat thread with copper past -CRC-.





- Release hexagon nuts (1) on rear axle carrier.
- Remove exhaust bracket (2).





- Release hexagon nut (1) on final muffler.
- Remove complete exhaust system.
