Electronic Power Control (EML)

Electronic Power Control (EML)

BMW uses two different EML Systems. The first system is manufactured by Bosch and is used on all EML equipped vehicles up to 1995 model year production. The new system is manufactured by Siemens and is being used on 1995 model year vehicles with the V-12 engine.

Bosch system is called - EML
Siemens system is called - EML IIIs

Functions of EML include: Electronic Throttle Control
Idle Control
Cruise Control

The EML control module responds to electrical inputs from the accelerator pedal and controls the power output of the engine by electronically controlling the throttle valves.

There is no mechanical linkage between the accelerator pedal and the throttle valves.

The EML system is monitored internally, as well as all of the inputs and output controls, for faults. Safety functions are built into the system to ensure the reliability of system operation.

The driver is warned of problems with the EML system through either a warning lamp in the cluster or a message in the check control matrix.
