Brake - Light heck Warning On After Recoding LCM

SUBJECT
Check Brake Light Warning Illuminated After Coding LCM

MODEL
E38 (7 Series), E39 (5 Series)
Vehicles produced September 1998 to November 1998 and January 1999

SITUATION
After recoding the LCM, or after installing a new LCM, the brake bulb warning is illuminated in the Check Control when the ignition switch is in position KL R (accessory position). The brake light bulbs function normally, and no faults are set.

CAUSE
ZCS coding error

CORRECTION
Update the ZCS code in the Instrument Cluster, then recode the LCM - do not replace any parts.

PROCEDURE Using DIS or MoDiC,:

1. Select Coding/Programming

2. Select "ZCS coding"

3. Select "E38/E39 series" (as appropriate)

4. Select "Recoding"

5. Select "IKE/Kombi"

6. The screen displays "IKE/Kombi has been selected?" - Answer "Yes".

7. Select "Recode control unit"

8. The screen displays the question "Should module be rigidly assigned"

- Answer "Yes".

9. The screen displays the VIN with the question "Chassis # change?"

- Answer "No".

10. All (3) lines of ZCS code are displayed with the question "Change?"

- Answer "Yes".

11. The GM line of code is then displayed with the question "Selection correct?

- Answer "Yes"

12. The SA line of code is then displayed with the question "Selection correct?

- Answer "No"





13. Using the keypad displayed on the screen, overwrite the SA line with a new SA line, changing the 1st character of the SA line from "0" to "2", and changing the checksum (the last character) according to the table shown. (For example, SA line: 00000C1005825444B changes to 20000C1005825444H)

14. Answer "Yes" to the question "Selection correct?"

15. The VN line of code is then displayed with the question "Selection correct?

- Answer "Yes"

16. All (3) lines of ZCS code are displayed with the question "Change?". Check SA line to confirm the correct input - Answer "Yes" if correct.

- Answer "No" if not correct, and repeat ZCS code entry from Step 5.

17. Follow the on screen instructions to complete the change of ZCS code in the Instrument Cluster.

18. Select "ZCS coding"

19. Select "E38/E39 series" (as appropriate)

20. Select "Recoding"

21. Select "LCM"

22. The screen displays "LCM has been selected?" - Answer "Yes".

23. The screen displays the question "Should module be rigidly assigned"
- Answer "Yes".

24. The screen displays the VIN with the question "Chassis # correct?" - Answer "Yes".

25. Select "Start coding? "- Answer "Yes".

26. Follow the on screen instructions to complete the recoding of the LCM.
