SUBJECT

Oxygen Sensor Faults

MODEL

E39 and E38 with M62 engine produced 9/98 - 2/99

SITUATION

Check engine light is illuminated and one or more of the following oxygen sensor fault codes are set in the Engine Control Module (DME):

Fault Code 5, 13, 10 and/or 18

CAUSE

The exact cause of the fault code is under investigation.

PROCEDURE

IF THESE FAULT CODES ARE ENCOUNTERED DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE PRIOR TO CONTACTING THE TECHNICAL HOTLINE!

Replacement of the oxygen sensor usually resolves the problem, however since the failure of the oxygen sensor is difficult to reproduce it is recommended that the technical hotline be contacted whenever an M62 equipped vehicle within the production range 9/98 - 2/99 is encountered with these faults.

Service Engineering is requesting specific information to assist in the analysis of these faults and will plan to evaluate the vehicle at any BMW center with problem vehicles that meet the specified criteria.

In order to assist us in resolving this problem the following information must be faxed to the Technical Hotline:

-- Fault Survey Screen (listing all 02 sensor faults)

-- Fault Conditions for all oxygen sensor faults that are stored in the DME

-- DME ID Page

-- Name Of Contact/Technician Required information to be faxed:

1. Printout the fault survey that lists all faults stored in the DME.

2. Printout the fault conditions for all oxygen sensor faults that are stored in the DME (Example Fault Code 5)

3. Printout the fault conditions for all oxygen sensor faults that are stored in the DME (Example Fault Code 13)

4. Printout the DME Identification page

5. Fax all documents to the technical hotline at 201-930-8424.

6. DO NOT REPLACE ANY PARTS UNLESS INSTRUCTED TO DO SO BY THE TECHNICAL HOTLINE OR SERVICE ENGINEERING!
