Central Link Rear Suspension (E36)

Central Link Rear Suspension (E36)

Equipped only on the E36-318/325i/is and M3, the central arm is a cast iron longitudinal arm that is bolted to the body through a rubber bushing mount. The wheels are additionally supported by two transverse arms that are connected to the rear axle subframe. The final drive is also mounted to the sub-frame which is isolated from the body through rubber bushings.

The design of this rear suspension provides for individual tuning of longitudinal and lateral forces acting on the vehicle. Longitudinal forces such as accelerating and braking are absorbed by the central arm and bushing. The lateral forces such as bumps and cornering are absorbed by the transverse links.
