PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT:
M73 Secondary Air Pump Circuit Rewiring

MODEL:
E38 - 750iLA with M73 engine Prod. 8198 - 10/98

Situation:
Wiring for the secondary air circuit is reversed at the Engine Control Modules (ECM/DME) which may lead to the illumination of the "Check Engine" light and set the following fault:
FC 79 (4F) - Undefined

Affected Vehicles:
This Service Action involves E38 vehicles with M73 engines which were produced from 8/98 - 10/98.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is aflected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

Correction:
The wiring in module connector # 4 of DME I pin 3 and DME II pin 31 must be swapped as indicated below.






1. Remove the cover of the E-Box




2. Remove modular connector 5 (1) from DME 1.

3. Remove modular connector 4 (3) (40 pins-Black) from DME 1




4. Locate pin 3 of modular connector 4 (1) (X60104) of DME 1.




5. Release the locking tap (2) and remove the gray connector (3) segment which contains pin 3.




6. Use BMW special tool 61 1 134 (3) to carefully remove pin 3 and the brown/green wire.




7. Unwrap the electrical tape (2) from the wiring harness so that the brown/green wire (1) can later be reinstalled into modular connector 4 X60204 of DME 2




8. Remove modular connector 5 (2) from DME 2.

9. Remove modular connector 4 (4) (X60204 40 pins-Gray) from DME 2




10. Locate pin 31 of modular connector 4 (1) (X60204) of DME 2

11. Release the locking tap (2) and remove the black connector (3) segment which contains pin 31.




12. Use BMW special tool 61 1 134 (3) to carefully remove pin 31 and the brown/blue wire.




13. Unwrap the electrical tape (2) from thE wiring harness so that the brown/bluE wire (1) can be reinstalled into modula connector 4 X60104 of DME 1




14. Install the brown/green wire (4) into pin location 31 of X60204 (DME 2) (2)

15. Install the brown/blue wire (3) into pin location 3 of X60104 (DME 1) (1)

16. Reassemble modular connector 4 (X60204) of DME 2.

17. Reassemble modular connector 4 (X60104) of DME 1.




18 Rewrap both wire harnesses with electrical tape.
Reinstall the connectors and E box cover.

Service Action Label Instructions:
This Service Action has been assigned code number 243. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-120) and:
a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b) punch out code number 243 printed on the label and,
c) affix the label to the B pillar as shown:




If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
