SUBJECT:
Service Action No. 98E-A03
MODEL:
M roadster, M coupe
Situation:
During initial production start-up an incorrect Vehicle Emission Control Information label may have been attached to the underside of the engine compartment hood.
Vehicles Affected:
This Service Action affects M roadster and M coupe models produced from 7/98 through 9/98.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle within the chassis ranges below is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to visually check the affected label on the underside of the hood.
The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes.
NOTE:
Affected vehicles will not be listed on the Dealer Communication System (DCS).
Model Chassis Number Range
M roadster LC87649 - LC881 76
M coupe LC60037 - LC60634
Correction:
If requested by a customer, or on any new cars in stock, the repair consists of checking the Vehicle Emission Control Information label on the underside of the hood to see if the correct label is in place, and installing the correct one if necessary. Each owner of an affected car will receive a notification letter (sample attached) and a replacement label. The owner can either install the new label, or request that it be installed at your BMW center.
Procedure:
Check the eight digit label number of the affected label on the underside of the hood. If the number reads "1 439 258 c", as in the illustration below, the correct label is in place, and no further action is necessary.
If the number on the label reads "1 439 258 b" it must be replaced.
Wipe the existing label clean and carefully place a new label over the old one so that it completely covers the old label.
Parts Information:
A label will be included in each customer notification letter. Additional labels may be ordered, if needed for individual cars, by using the order form attached to this bulletin.
