Removal and Installation
Remove automatic transmission (A5S 31OZ)
Note: After completion of work, check transmission oil level and top up if necessary.
On vehicles with ASC+T, the throttle body (ASC+T) and/or the expansion tank on the master brake cylinder can become damaged when the transmission is lowered.
Remove throttle body (ASC+T).
Disconnect battery.
Removing complete exhaust system.
Remove heat shield (1).
Remove brackets (1 and 2) for exhaust assembly mounting (only if fitted).
Remove clamp (3).
Installation: Install clamp (3) with long collar (4) at rear.
Unscrew propeller shaft on transmission.
Installation:
Replace stop nuts.
Tighten nuts to specified torque.
Tightening torque, refer to Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, Specifications.
Loosen screwed-on ring (1) several turns.
Installation:
After installation, tighten screw ring (1) with special tool 261 040.
Tightening torque, refer to Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, Specifications.
Press joint disk away from transmission.
Unscrew centre mount.
Installation:
Preload centre mount in direction of travel (A) 4 - 6 mm.
Tightening torque, refer to Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, Specifications.
Bend down propeller shaft and pull off transmission.
Caution: Do not let propeller shaft fall into joints. Suspend propeller shaft from vehicle with a piece of wire.
Drain off fluid.
Remove oil filler pipe (1) (if installed).
Installation:
Tightening torque, refer to Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, Specifications.
Slacken nut (1).
Caution: Always brace bolt with special tool 24 5 210 to avoid deformation of the cable.
Note: Special tool 24 5 210 can only be fitted in position "P".
Unscrew cable from holder.
Pull out cable.
Tightening torque, refer to Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, Specifications.
Installation:
Adjusting shift mechanism, refer to Shift Linkage A/T, Adjustments.
Turn bayonet lock (1) counterclockwise.
Pull off plug (2).
Lift wire harness out of holder.
Installation:
Connect plug (2) so that marks (3) are aligned.
Lift wire harness on transmission out of holder.
Remove the oxygen-sensor plug (1) from its holder.
Unscrew oil cooler pipe clamps on crankcase and oil sump.
Remove holder (1) for oil cooler pipe.
Pull oil cooler pipe out of transmission.
Installation:
Check the O-rings (2) and replace if necessary.
Lift cover off opening in guard.
Remove all three bolts which connect the torque converter to the drive plate using special tool 24 1 110.
To do this, rotate engine using front central screw in stages of 1200.
Installation:
Install screw with special tool 24 1 110 and tighten down with torque wrench.
Tightening torque, refer to Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, Specifications.
Caution: Only use original bolts.
Preassemble special tool 24 5 300 suitable for the 5 H 18 transmission as marked.
Support transmission with fixture 24 5 300 in conjunction with lifting gear 00 2 020.
Engine M50:
Removing end fire wall
Unscrew injection pipe cover (1).
Support rear engine before unscrewing the cross member.
Mount special tool 11 0 030 from above through the intake manifold in the holder on the crankcase.
Mount special tool 00 0 200 and hook it in. Tighten spindle (2).
Engine M51:
Remove cover from manifold.
Secure special tool 11 2 370 on intake pipe, rear.
Assemble special tool 00 0 200 and attach to special tool 11 2 370.
Tighten spindle.
Remove cross tube.
If necessary, unscrew holder for centre of gravity suspension.
Unscrew cross member.
Lower transmission by turning the spindle only enough that there is no contact with the wall or heater connections (check visually).
Installation:
Centering the transmission.
Tightening torque, refer to Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, Specifications.
Unscrew transmission on engine.
Unscrew Torx bolts with a Torx socket.
Installation:
Check that washers are fitted to Torx screws.
Tightening torque, refer to Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, Specifications.
Secure the converter so that it cannot slip out by positioning and clamping special tool 24 4 080 on the transmission housing with the flat side of the retaining tongue (1) facing the converter. Pull transmission off engine.
Caution: A lifting fixture with mounted transmission may be moved only in completely lowered position. Danger of accident!
Caution: Check that dowel sleeves (1 and 2) are not missing. If applicable, transfer dowel sleeves from transmission or use new dowel sleeves.
Version with Sheet Metal Flywheel:
Caution: Keep to sequence of installation.
Sheet metal flywheel (2) has three indentations for the torque converter mounting tabs.
When guiding the engine and transmission together the three mounting tabs on the torque converter must be aligned with the three indentations in the sheet metal flywheel.
Non-conformance leads to follow-up damage on the automatic transmission.
Turning on the torque converter, or engine, is no longer possible after guiding the engine and transmission together and would lead to damage.
Bore on drive plate must point perpendicularly to centre of opening in guard.
Turn torque converter on the transmission that bores in the tabs point to the centre of bores in the flywheel.
Screw special tool 24 2 300 into the tab.
Lift automatic transmission until bore in drive plate is reached.
Carefully guide transmission into bore of drive plate using special tool 24 2 300.
Bolt transmission housing to engine.
Unscrew special tool 24 2 300 from the tab towards the front.
Mount torque converter.
Tightening torque, refer to Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, Specifications.
