SUBJECT:
Engine Speed Appears To Hang During Shifts

MODEL:
E46 - 323i and 328i with M52 TU engine and manual trans. produced 4/98 - 3/99
E39 - 528i/iT with M52 TU engine and manual trans. produced 9/98 - 3/99
Z3 - with M52 TU engine and manual trans. produced 8/98 - 3/99

Situation:
Customer may complain of the following:

-- Engine RPM momentarily hangs up during shifts

-- Engagement of gears is not smooth 1-2 & 2-3 shifts

Cause:

1. Clutch depressed signal is not being received by the DME.

2. Program within the Engine Control Module ECM/DME does not allow the engine speed to quickly drop when the clutch pedal is depressed.

Correction:
In order to address this concern the DME must be receiving a signal from the clutch switch and the DME may need to be reprogrammed.

Procedure:

1. Check if the clutch depressed signal is being received by the DME:

-- Check the signal status under DME diagnosis using the DIS/MODIC or by checking the signal at pin 23 of X6004 of the DME using a breakout box and voltmeter.

2. Some vehicles may have a two wire clutch switch installed instead of the three wire hall switch.

If a customer complaint is received on vehicles with the two wire switch they should be upgraded to the new style three wire switch.

A. Locate the clutch switch (2) (cruise control interrupt).

B. Check if the switch has a two wire or three wire connection.

C. If three wire switch is installed go to step 4.

D. If two wire switch is installed go to step 3.

3. Upgrading to the three wire switch:

In order to upgrade to the three wire switch an adapter harness and new clutch switch (P/N 61 31 8 381 612) must be installed. The adapter harness installs as follows:

a) Locate the clutch switch (2) (cruise control interrupt).

b) The adapter harness kit consists of the following:

-- Harness P/N 61 11 0 004 349:

- Two pin male connector

(2) - connected to original clutch switch connector.

- Three pin female connector

(3) - connected to new clutch switch.

-- Quick Connect (4) P/N 61 13 8 364 566 - Used to connect VI/GE wire to 12V (VI/GE) supply at brake switch.

-- Clutch switch (1) P/N 61 31 8 381 612.

c) Install new clutch switch (1) and connect blue 4 pin female connector.

Note:
Connection to new clutch switch may require:
- 3 pin terminal housing - P/N 61 13 1 383 738
- 3 pin terminal cover - P/N 61 13 1 383 826

d) Connect two pin male connector (2) to the original two pin female clutch switch connector (3).

e) Connect VI/GE (5) to VI/GE wire (12 V supply) of brake light switch connector (6) using a quick connect (4).

-- Pin out of 3 pin clutch switch connection:
- Pin 1 (BR/SW) goes to ground via pin 2 of the old 2 pin connector.
- Pin 2 (BL/BR) goes to DME pin 23 via pin 1 of the old 2 pin connector.
- Pin 3 (VI/GE)to be connected to 12 V supply at brake switch using quick connect (P/N 61 13 8 364 566).

4. Reprogram the Engine Control Module with P17.0 or higher. After reprogramming the DME the listed part numbers for a "Programmed control unit" must be displayed on the DME identification screen.

Note:
Part numbers are subject to change with a newer/higher version of programming software numbers based on CD P17.0.
