Steel Panel
The headliner panel must be disengaged from the drive assembly and moved rearward in order to access the roof panel attaching screws.
To do this, start with a fully closed sunroof. Then, using the hex tool from the vehicle's tool kit, remove the motor access cover and insert the hex key into the motor drive, turning it 90° counter clockwise.
The sunroof panel will drop at the rear by approx. 2-3 mm. At this point, the metal tab on the crossmember will disengage from the headliner panel, and the headliner panel can be pushed rearward by hand. This exposes the roof panel attaching
To re-engage the headliner panel, insert the hex tool and turn it clockwise 90 degrees. The rear of the sunroof panel should move flush with the roof panel. The headliner panel can now be manually moved forward until locked.
E31: The sunroof assembly for the E-31 is different. To disengage the headliner for access to the panel attaching hardware, the following procedure must be followed:
- Start with the sunroof in the fully closed position.
- Drive the sunroof to the vent position.
- Push outward on the left and right metal rods located at the inside forward edges of the headliner.
- Push the headliner back to expose the attaching screws.
CAUTION: The sunroof panel must never be moved toward the open position when the headliner is disengaged. Mechanical damage can occur.
