Trunk / Liftgate: Adjustments



41 62 014 Adjusting Trunk Lid To Fit (Touring)

NOTE:
- The flaps are fitted and screwed into the unfinished body shell.
- Unpainted surfaces become visible after subsequent movement.
- These surfaces must be touched up with paint in the body color.

Open rear window frame (with rear window).
Open trunk lid.
Remove finisher at top on tail panel.
Remove trim from trunk lid.
Remove trims from rear window frame.







- Preliminary work:

Check lateral guides on left and right sides of trunk lid and replace if necessary.







Release screws on bracket of lateral guide on body to the point where the bracket can be moved.







Loosen screws on lateral guides on left and right sides of trunk lid and fully retract the lateral guides.







Check fulcrum pads on lower section of trunk lid lock for damage and replace if necessary.

Release screws (1) in lower section of luggage compartment lid lock so that it can be moved and center itself.







CAUTION: The lower section of the trunk lid lock must not scrape against the upper section.







CAUTION: The eccentric pin on the lower section of the trunk lid lock rotates when being locked from upper section of trunk lid lock.

Secure upper section of trunk lid lock with help of a screwdriver.

Trunk lid lock - upper section unlocked

Unfasten plug connection to actuator motor for the eccentric pin in the lower section of the trunk lid lock from the bracket.

CAUTION: Eccentric pin in lower section of trunk lid lock must be at lower dead center.

CAUTION:
- After disconnecting plug connector from actuator motor, trunk lid is opened by electric unlocking fixture of upper section of trunk lid lock.
- For this reason, the cable connections to the upper section of the trunk lid lock must remain in place since otherwise the trunk lid can only be opened by the emergency handle.
- Eccentric pin of lower section of trunk lid lock remains at bottom dead center point after unlocking
.







Unfasten plug connection to actuator motor by pressing down both lugs, then pull apart.







Unlock upper section of trunk lid lock by pressing button in handle trim of trunk lid.
1 = upper section of trunk lid lock locked
2 = upper section of trunk lid lock unlocked

- Adjustment of trunk lid:

CAUTION:
- Before closing the trunk lid and when closing the trunk lid, ensure that the body and/or trunk lid are not damaged.
- The lower section of the trunk lid lock must not scrape against the upper section.








Height adjustment:
Luggage compartment lid with rear window frame opened.
Release hinge screws for rear window frame and luggage compartment lid on left and right to the point that the luggage compartment lid can be moved with the rear window frame.

CAUTION:
- When the hinge screws for rear window frame and luggage compartment lid are released, the position of the overall assembly (rear window frame and luggage compartment lid) changes with respect to the body.
- The position of the rear window frame to the luggage compartment lid remains unchanged
.

Close trunk lid carefully.
Adjust gap dimensions and position of rear lid relative to the other attachments on the body.

CAUTION: On transition area between roof/rear window frame, rear window frame must not extend above height of roof otherwise wind noise will be created.

Retighten hinge screws for rear window frame and luggage compartment lid.







Gap adjustment and length adjustment:
Rear window frame open, luggage compartment lid closed.
Loosen nuts on luggage compartment lid of left and right hinge bracket to the point where the luggage compartment lid can be moved.

CAUTION:
- When the hinge bracket screws for luggage compartment lid are released, the position of the rear window frame changes with respect to the luggage compartment lid.
- Always check the setting of the rear window frame to the luggage compartment lid; make an adjustment if necessary
.







Adjust gap dimensions and position of trunk lid to other body fittings.
The trunk lid should be approx. 1 mm lower than the side walls and not higher.







To obtain parallel alignment of trunk lid/body beside the rear window, it is advisable to align the top edge of the trunk lid parallel to the edge of the D-pillar.
Gap (A) between top edge of trunk lid/edge of D-pillar approx. 27 mm.

NOTE: Rear window frame open:







Tighten down nuts of luggage compartment lid on left and right hinge brackets.







Retighten upper hinge screws for rear window frame and luggage compartment lid on left and right.







Open trunk lid, taking care not to alter the adjustment.
Retighten lower hinge screws for rear window frame and luggage compartment lid on left and right.







Refit plug connection to actuator motor for the eccentric pin in the lower section of the trunk lid lock.

CAUTION: The eccentric pin in the lower section of the trunk lid lock turns in the trunk lid when the button is pressed:

Operate button in luggage compartment lid, eccentric pin moves to top dead center.







Perform contact pattern test for upper section of trunk lid lock: e.g. coat with grease.
Carefully close and then reopen luggage compartment lid.
Upper section (1) of trunk lid lock must not scrape against lower section of trunk lid lock.
Eccentric pin in lower section of trunk lid lock must not scrape against upper section (2) of trunk lid lock.
The contact pattern (3) of upper section of trunk lid lock on eccentric pin should be centred (settling characteristics of trunk lid are compensated).







View with open rear window (with rear window frame) from above to luggage compartment lid lock:
1 = trunk lid lock - lower section
2 = trunk lid lock - upper section
3 = sliding section







To adjust height of upper section of luggage compartment lid lock, release screws, move upper section of lock and retighten screws.
Repeat contact pattern test after height adjustment.







- Adjustment of lateral guide on trunk lid:

If necessary, release screws on bracket of lateral guide on body to the point where the bracket can be moved.
Move bracket of lateral guides on body to center position.







Release screw of lateral guide on luggage compartment lid and completely remove the lateral guide.
Release screw of lateral guide to the point where the lateral guide can still be moved.

Close luggage compartment lid; the bracket of the lateral guide on the body and the lateral guide on the luggage compartment lid are centered with respect to each other.
The bracket of the lateral guide continues to touch against the body without clearance as does the lateral guide against the luggage compartment lid.







Open trunk lid.
Tighten released bracket screws on lateral guide on body.







- Adjustment of preload of trunk lid lateral guides:

Adjust preload of trunk lid by adjusting lateral guides.
To adjust preload, remove one tooth from catch and retighten screw.







- Adjustment of rear window:

Prerequisite:
Trunk lid is correctly adjusted.
Close luggage compartment lid and open rear window frame.
Loosen nuts on rear window frame of left and right hinge bracket to the point where the rear window frame can still just be moved.







Release screws in lower section of lock so that it can be moved and center itself.

CAUTION: Before closing the rear window frame and when closing the rear window frame, ensure that the body and/or rear window frame are not damaged.

Carefully close rear window frame.

Adjust gap dimensions and position of rear window frame relative to other fittings on body.

CAUTION: On transition area between roof/trunk lid, trunk lid must not extend above height of roof otherwise wind noise will be created.

To adjust height of rear window frame, insert spacers between hinge bracket and rear window frame.







Open rear window frame, taking care not to alter the adjustment.
Tighten down nuts of rear window frame on left and right hinge brackets.
Close rear window frame and check adjustment, repeating if necessary.

NOTE: Three versions of the rear window frame are fitted.

If there are different adjustment methods, reference is made at the appropriate point.







Version 1:
with locking pin (1).
Once the nut (2) has been released, only the height of the locking pin (1) can be adjusted.







Version 2:
with locking pin (1).
Once the nut (2) has been released, the height and the inclination of the locking pin (1) can be adjusted.







Version 3:
with striker (1).

Adjusting procedures:

NOTE: Version with locking pin, only height of locking pin can be adjusted:







Open rear window frame.
When closing the rear window frame, ensure that the locking pin (1) is centered in the middle of the lower section of the lock (2).
Close rear window frame.







NOTE: If the adjustment range of the already slackened lock base is not sufficient to center the locking pin, slacken screws (1) of upper lock section so that upper lock section can still be moved.







Open trunk lid.
Retighten screws in lower section of lock; if necessary, retighten screws in upper section.

Adjust gap dimensions, height and position of rear window frame relative to other fittings on rear window frame.







To adjust height of rear window frame at lock, release lock nut (1) and turn locking pin (2).
Tighten down lock nut (1) again.

Adjusting procedures:

NOTE: Version with locking pin, height and inclination of locking pin can be adjusted.







Open rear window frame.
When closing the rear window frame, ensure that the locking pin (1) is centered in the middle of the lower section of the lock (2).
Close rear window frame.







To adjust inclination of locking pin, slacken nut (1) so that locking pin can still be inclined.







When closing the rear window frame, ensure that the locking pin (1) is centered in the middle of the lower section of the lock (2).
Close rear window frame.







Open trunk lid.
Tighten screws on lower section of lock back down.

Adjust gap dimensions, height and position of rear window frame relative to other fittings on rear window frame.







NOTE: Do not alter inclination of locking pin (2) when adjusting height.

To adjust height of rear window frame at lock, release lock nut (1) and turn locking pin (2).
Tighten down lock nut (1) again.

Adjusting procedures:

NOTE: Version with striker:







Open rear window frame.
Slacken lock nut (1) so that inclination of striker (3) together with moulded section (2) can be adjusted.







When closing the rear window frame, ensure that the striker (1) is centered in the middle in the rotary latch in the lower section of the lock (2).
Gap (A) the same on both sides.







Open trunk lid.
Tighten screws on lower section of lock back down.







When closing the rear window frame, ensure that there is a gap of approx. 1 mm between the striker (1) and the rotary latch (2) in the lower section of the lock (2).
Change position of striker accordingly. Close rear window frame.







NOTE:
- Do not alter inclination of striker (4) when tightening.
- Make sure the moulded section (2) rests correctly against the contact surface (3).

Open rear window frame.
Tighten lock nut (1).

Adjust gap dimensions, height and position of rear window frame relative to other fittings on rear window frame.







NOTE: Do not alter inclination of striker (2) when adjusting height.

To adjust height of rear window frame at lock, release lock nut (1) and turn striker (2).
Tighten down lock nut (1) again.

CAUTION: After adjusting the rear window frame, always check the position of the wiper axis relative to the drive disc and the limit stop on the rear window wiper motor.
