Removing and Installing Automatic Transmission
(A5S 360R / 390R)
Note: After completion of work, check transmission oil level.
Caution: Use only the approved automatic transmission fluid in this automatic transmission.
Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the automatic transmission!
Disconnect battery negative lead.
Remove exhaust system.
Remove heat shield on right.
M54:
Unclip cable for oxygen sensors.
Caution: Driving without reinforcement plate is not permitted.
Remove reinforcement plate.
Remove engine underguard at front.
Detach stabilizer bar and slide forwards.
This operation is described in the section "Removing and installing front stabilizer".
Remove and install front propeller shaft. Unclip vent line from transmission at bracket (engine).
M54:
Release screws and remove exhaust bracket (1).
Grip clamp bushing (1) and slacken nut (2).
Installation:
Adjust selector lever.
Grip cable (1) at hexagon (2).
Release nut (3).
Pull cable (1) out of holder.
Tightening torque, refer to Specifications.
Unlock attachment plug (1) and disconnect.
Unclip cable (2) from transmission housing.
Caution! Catch and dispose of escaping transmission fluid.
Release screw (1).
Withdraw hydraulic lines (2) for automatic transmission fluid cooler from transmission housing.
Installation:
Replace sealing ring.
Caution! Special tool 24 5 301 must be provided with an additional bore hole as shown in illustration.
To achieve a stable assembly position, this bore is necessary for retrofitting the special tool 24 5 301.
Assemble special tool 00 2 030/24 5 301 /24 5 305. To do so, insert pivot pin into rear bore of special tool 24 5 301.
Caution! Adjust special tool as described above.
Only in this way is it ensured that the transmission unit rests safely on the special tool 24 5 305 and does not tilt.
Support transmission and transfer case with special tool 00 2 030/24 5 301 /24 5 305.
Unclip oxygen sensor cable at transmission cross-member.
Unclip cable from transmission.
Release screws and remove transmission cross-member.
Tightening torque, refer to Specifications.
Release screws.
Tightening torque, refer to Specifications.
Installation:
Replace self-locking nuts.
When tightening screws down: Grip each screw and tighten down nut. This prevents the flexible disk from being subjected to torsion stress.
Grip propeller shaft at center bearing and release nuts.
Tightening torque, refer to Specifications.
Installation:
Center bearing must be aligned at right angles to propeller shaft.
Caution! Do not let propeller shaft fall into joints.
Joints and rubber sleeve can be damaged on constant-velocity joint.
Bend propeller shaft downwards at center bearing, remove from transmission output flange and tie back to one side with cord or wire.
Release screw (1).
Lever out protective cap (2).
Release retaining screws on torque converter with special tool 24 1 110.
Tightening torque, refer to Specifications.
Note: Continue cranking engine at central bolt in direction of rotation.
Unscrew special tool 24 2 300 from torque converter.
Release screws.
Tightening torque, refer to Specifications.
Pull out transmission with transfer case towards rear and lower.
Remove transfer case from transmission.
Installation:
Note dowel sleeves.
Replace damaged dowel sleeves.
Caution! When joining up engine and transmission, ensure ease of movement of torque converter.
Installation:
Screw special tool 24 2 300 into tapped hole (1).
Installation:
Turn torque converter until special tool 24 2 300 is flush with bore in driving disk.
Flange automatic transmission to engine.
Installation:
Bore (1) in driving disk must be accessible from aperture in oil sump.
