Removing and Installing Steering Wheel




32 33 000 Removing and installing steering wheel

Warning!
Note airbag safety instructions!
Incorrect handling can activate airbag and result in injury.
Disconnect negative lead from battery, refer to instructions on disconnecting and connecting battery.




Release both screws (torx T 27/30).

Installation:
Do not pinch wires.
Tightening Torque 32 34 1AZ.

Up to 3/99:



Remove connector from:
Squib (1)
Horn (2)
Steering wheel switch (3).
Remove airbag unit.

Caution! Airbag unit must be placed with padded cushion facing upward (luggage compartment).




Move steering wheel to straight-ahead drive setting (markings flush on steering gear and steering spindle).
Unscrew bolt. Mark position of steering wheel relative to steering spindle. Pull off steering wheel.

Caution!
When screw is unfastened, torsion spring (F) cuts in which secures contact ring in central setting.
On no account must the steering wheel be moved if screw is not tightened.
Contact ring will be damaged!

Installation:
Tightening Torque 32 33 1AZ.

Installation:



Retaining pin (1) must engage in recess (2).

Installation:



Adjust contact ring if necessary:
Press down spring (F).
Determine centre position of contact ring by halving the total number of turns. Ensure marks are aligned (1).
Release spring (F).

From 3/99:



Pull off plug (1...2).
Remove airbag unit.

Caution! Airbag unit must be placed with padded cushion facing upward (luggage compartment).




Move steering wheel/wheels to straight-ahead position.
Release screw and remove steering wheel.

Installation:



Move wheels to straight-ahead position.
Fit steering wheel. Markings on steering wheel and steering spindle must match up.
Tightening Torque 32 33 1AZ.

Installation:



Retaining pins (1) must snap into place in recesses (2).
