Primary Camshaft Drive

PRIMARY CAMSHAFT DRIVE

The primary drive for the camshafts is redesigned from the M60. A single roller chain with rubber coated cam gears is used on the M62. The idler gear has been replaced with a "V" shaped, aluminum deflector rail. All tensioner rails including the deflector rail have snap on plastic coated chain guides to reduce noise levels.

Timing chain adjustment is carried out with a hydraulic tensioner mounted on the upper timing case cover for cylinders 1-4.

A trigger wheel is bolted to the intake cam gear on the 1-4 cylinder bank. The trigger wheel has asymmetrical teeth similar to the M44 engine. The design is for future engine management uses. The camshaft position sensor is the Hall Effect type producing a reliable low voltage indication of camshaft position and thus the compression stroke.
