SUBJECT:
Power Steering Intermittently in Default Mode

MODEL:
E38 (7 Series) Vehicles produced 9/98 to 8/00

SITUATION:
Intermittently, and immediately after starting the engine, the Servotronic goes into default mode. In this mode, power assistance continues to operate, but is no longer speed dependant. Normal function is restored if the ignition is switched off, then on again.

Fault code 130 (Speedo signal interrupted) is set in the General Module. Note that if this fault is stored more than 30 times, the Servotronic will remain permanently in default mode.

CAUSE:
Hardware fault in DSC control module

CORRECTION:
On a customer complaint basis only, install DSC module repair kit P/N 34 52 6 755 742

PROCEDURE:
Install the DSC module (refer to repair instructions 34 52 515), code the module, adjust the steering angle sensor, and perform an "end-of-belt" test:

-- To code the module, use DIS or MoDiC:

Select Coding/Programming, and follow the on-screen instructions and prompts to complete the coding process.

-- To adjust the steering angle sensor, use DIS or MoDiC:

Select Diagnosis, and forward to the "Fault symptom selection" screen.

Select "Function Selection" / "Complete vehicle" / "Chassis" / "ABS system with DSC" / "Test schedule", and forward to the "Diagnosis selection" screen.

Select "Service Functions" and forward to the next screen.

Select "4. Adjusting steering angle sensor", and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the adjustment process.

-- To perform the "End-of-belt" test:

Return to the "Diagnosis selection" screen (above):

Select "Expert mode" and forward to the next screen.

Select "9. End-of-belt test", and follow the on screen instructions to complete the test.
